How to make paperpieced lavender sachets

These cute lavender sachets are an easy to make but nice and useful gift. Use them to perfume laundry drawers or just put them under your pillow to benefit from lavender's healing properties.

For a start choose the block you want to make and print the foundation pattern in the correct size then choose the fabrics. My patterns are 9x9cm.

When everything is ready, cut the pieces considering seam allowance.
Place the first piece of fabric on the unprinted side of the paper right side up paying attention to correct positioning. To better be able to position the fabric correctly use a light box or just hold the paper and fabric against the light.

Then put the second fabric right side down onto the first fabric. Make sure both fabrics overlap the line where the seam will go with enough margin for seam allowance. Pin in place.

Sew with fabrics down and printed side of the paper template up following the printed line. Pay attention not to change the position of the fabrics in the process.

Turn the paper over, fold only the paper back onto itself along the seam you have just sewn, exposing the fabric of the seam allowance and cut to size.

Iron the pieces of fabric in place.

Place the third piece onto the second aligning the side where the seam will go overlapping the line to be sewn with at least the seam allowance.

Pin in place and sew as explained above. Then turn around and cut away excess seam allowance.

Iron the third piece of fabric in place.

Continue to add pieces as explained above.

When the block is done take the paper off. Be careful to rip the paper off gently in order not to damage the seams.

Cut the back of the sachet from your chosen fabric to the same size as the front.

Place back and front right side on right side and, beginning in the middle of one of the sides, sew around the satchet leaving a short opening.

Turn the satchet outside out throught the opening and prepare the dried lavender.

Fill the satchet with dried lavender flowers. You may use a small funnel or make one yourself from a piece of paper as you see in the picture. Or you can simply use a spoon.

Close the opening using a blind stitch and voilĂ .... this is your sachet.

You can do this with any foundation pieced block, but pay attention to not end up with single pieces to small to be handled well.
